DRUGS IN OUR SCHOOLS
THE PROBLEM WON'T DISAPPEAR ON ITS OWN. WHAT ARE YOU AND YOUR SCHOOL DOING ABOUT IT?
IF THE ANSWER IS "NOTHING", WE HAVE A SOLUTION.
A SOLUTION THAT COMES WHEN YOU CALL . . .
"SNIFFING AROUND" FOR A SOLUTION TO YOUR SCHOOL'S DRUG PROBLEM OR JUST WANTING TO IMPLEMENT A SURE-PROOF PREVENTION PROGRAMME?
We would like to introduce you to the DRUG DOGZ School Drug Detection Programme. This is the first initiative of its kind in South Africa.
This programme has been successfully implemented in the U.S.A since 1976. Since then it has been successfully introduced into numerous other countries e.g. Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Netherlands and most recently Australia and New Zealand.
Surveys in the United States reveal a 95% acceptance rating from students, school administrators, teachers and parents indicates that the canine drug programme is an effective measure to minimize the presence of drugs on school campuses.
WHY ROLL OVER AND PLAY DEAD TO THE INCREASING DRUG PROBLEM FACING OUR CHILDREN?
Drugs are one of the biggest problems plaguing school campuses today.
Drug pushers cite that up to 80% of all drugs sold are either sold on school campuses or to children of school-going age. Studies reflect this. It was recently reported that up to 60% of all school children had either experimented with drugs and alcohol or were actively using them.
The choice is yours. You can either “roll over and play dead” or you can become pro-active and implement a non-invasive system of ridding our schools of drugs; thereby sending a clear message that our school campuses are for education and nothing else.
In a paper delivered by the head of the South African Police Narcotics Bureau to the Drug Advisory Board, on the nature and extent of drug trafficking and use in South Africa, the following points were made:
- A survey of current public opinion leads unequivocally to the perception that the war against narcotics-trafficking and use has been lost by the law enforcement agencies.
- The seizures made represent only the tip of the iceberg in terms of actual volume of drugs produced and sold but which evade the attention of the police.
- It can be safely concluded that the drug menace is a more significant threat to civilised society than ever before. The situation exists in spite of increase efforts on the part of law enforcement authorities worldwide to stem the tide.
- Since South Africa has emerged from international isolation it has increasingly become a transit point as well as a consumer market for many types of drugs.
We at DRUG DOGZ realise, as no doubt you do, that the dimensions of the problem require a comprehensive and integrated counter strategy that attempts to reduce the supply of, and diminish the demand for, drugs at our schools.
Although efforts have been made to mobilise concerted action against drug-related problems in South Africa, these efforts have not been successful. This has been mainly because of deeply-ingrained fragmentation. An innovative plan is needed to mobilise and sustain a comprehensive and integrated policy. A paradigm shift from a traditional one-dimensional to a multi-dimensional way of thinking and action in the field of combating drug-related problems is needed.
We at DRUG DOGZ believe that we have a plan which is not only in line with international practices but will also effectively reduce drugs in our schools.
DRUG DOGZ SCHOOL PROGRAMME
Firstly a few points must be clarified:-
* We are not a security company and do not arrest people
* We are merely a narcotic detection service
* We are not trying to take the place of the South African Police
but are trying to provide a service to schools as well as well as being a deterrent to would- be users and pushers of drugs in our schools
* Our dogs are trained to detect the presence of a drug. The
school is then alerted and the parents and school administrators then decide on the appropriate treatment or action to be taken. This is a far more pragmatic and child-friendly approach.
It must never be forgotten that the children are the victims and not the criminals in these cases and it is up to all of us to assist them where we can.
As a private company we are able to provide a detection service which will allow schools to identify individuals who may have a drug problem.
Up until now the only other choice one had was to perform invasive blood or urine tests, which gives the perception of guilt before being proven innocent. The other scenario was to wait until it was too late to help and say “I wish we could have done more”. WITH OUR PROGRAMME YOU CAN.
